Barbos Top Haggis in First Scrimmage

The Denver Barbarians outscored the Park City Haggis 104-5 in the first tune up of the 2012 Season.

Match Report by Mark Vandermolen

Denver Barbarian Head Coach Jason Kelly's words of wisdom in the pre-match speech to "be aggressive" and "that this is step number one" were taken to heart by the Barbarian squad that took the field in a friendly match in Grand Junction against Haggis from Utah. The match was played on a plus 40 degree (f) day, under a bright blue sky, on believe it or not a grass field that was not covered in snow. Match Captain Logan Collins led the team onto the field and within the first two minutes, hooker Luke Leinweber crossed the line for the match's first score. The first half was a high scoring affair with some good stretches of play although the winter rust was still apparent with some passing and handling errors that kept some promising phases from resulting in points. The Barbarians controlled much of the ball, the field territory, and the time of possession in the first half. The Denver Barbarian backs were credited with scoring five of the seven try's scored in the first half with Jody Kramer leading the way with a hat trick before halftime. The Barbo Defense was not tested much in the first half and they did not surrender any points to Haggis in the first half. With this being a friendly scrimmage, strict substitution rules did not apply and Jason Kelly was able to interject players freely onto, off and then back onto the field. Every squad member that made the trip and was willing and able to play did so with some getting a chance to shine in more than one different position on the pitch.  A young Haggis team was still able to put in some good hits and stall some of the Barbarians offense but in the end still relented 45 points in the first 40 minutes.

Halftime Score Denver Barbarians RFC 45 Haggis -0.

The Barbarians started the second half much the same as they did in the first half once again scoring a try by James Kyle Hitt who crashed through the Haggis defense to score just two minutes in. After yet another Barbarian try Haggis came through with a try of their own 8 minutes into the second half with Vi crashing through with some other Haggis forwards pushing the maul/ ruck. The rest of the match was up and down the field, back and forth but the Barbarian defense were able to hold the Haggis big pack with just one try for the match. Co -Club Captains Josh 'Yoshi" Masek and Maximo De Achaval both had solid performances with "Yoshi" leading the charge from the front row and Maximo leading the backs both with his hands and with his feet. Maximo had a couple of great tactical kicks that put the Barbarians down within scoring position inside the Haggis 22 and had a pretty good day with conversions making 12 out of 15 attempts. (James Kyle Hitt missed the only conversion not taken by Maximo.) Kickoff receiving seemed to be one of the aspects of the match that the Barbarians could improve upon.  Overall a good first effort but there is much work to do specially on improving upon the offensive and defensive schemes.

Final score 104-5.
