Tournament Report by Howard Kent
The 44TH Annual Denver 7s Tournament featured 36 teams playing in 5 divisions. Men’s Qualifier 8 Teams, Men’s Collegiate 6 Teams, Women’s 4 Teams, Men’s Social 8 Teams, Boys HS/U19s 10 Teams. Hosted on July 23, 2011 at Prairie View Sport Complex known as Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for the 5th year, the 4 pitches were full size, flat and fast with clear sunny weather and temperatures in the low 90s. Staff at DSGP estimated the total attendance to be about 1000, similar to 2010.
The participants in the Men’s Qualifier (West RFU Club 7s Super Regional) play for the Michael Sneath Memorial Cup as well as a spot in the USARugby Men’s National Club 7s Championship in San Francisco August 5-7, 2011. As this was the third West RFU 7s Super Regional Qualifier teams were seeded based on the finish in the previous Qualifiers in Dallas and Kansas City. Four teams were tied at the top of the WRFU 7s comp and another 2 were in the hunt so the top 3 finishers in Denver were to be the 3 seeds from the West to the National Championship. The stage was certainly set for some top quality 7s.
